ButlerWebCecil Gaines was a sharecropper’s son who grew up in the 1920s as a domestic servant for a family who casually destroyed his. Striking out on his own, Cecil was a valet of such efficiency and discretion that he became a butler in the White House, where he served numerous US Presidents over the decades and was a witness to history as the American civil rights movement was gaining momentum ­ even as his family had troubles of its own.
