Political and media manipulation as seen in four films Written and Directed by Greg Mitchell

Filmmaker Greg Mitchell will present clips from the following four of his films and discuss them with ArtsRock director and WQXR host Elliott Forrest.

Atomic Cover-up (2022)

Long suppressed footage of the human suffering caused by the US nuclear bombing of two Japanese cities in August of 1945 is uncovered. Winner of the top film and television award from the Organization of American Historians in 2024.

The First Attack Ads: Hollywood vs. Upton Sinclair (2023)

When author and socialist Upton Sinclair swept the Democratic primary for governor of California in August 1934- MGM producer Irving Thalberg ordered the creation of the first “attack ads” to appear on a screen. Emmy Award nominee.

Memorial Day Massacre: Workers Die, Film Buried (2023)

On Memorial Day in 1937, striking workers at Republic Steel in Chicago gathered for a picnic. When some marched towards the plant police killed ten of them, but newsreel film of the massacre disappeared. Emmy Award nominee.

The Atomic Bowl: Football at Ground Zera – and Nuclear Peril Today (2025)

A few months after the second atomic bomb blast, over Nagasaki, the U.S. military staged an all-star football game on a killing field, amid lingering radiation levels. Why? In addition to discussing and showing clips from each of these four films, Mitchell will talk about his two most recent books, also focusing on film ‘cover-up’ themes: The Tunnels: Escapes Under the Berlin Wall (JFK White House trying to bury an NBC documentary) and The Beginning or the End (President Truman vs. an MGM drama on the atomic bomb).
